"The process of producing a project on the Internet is -- on the web, I should say, is an intrinsically linked structure. As you may have seen and as you may have experienced it before, if you click on your mouse you just call another page, you call another image, you go from one site to the next. It's really completely undefined. There's no start. There's no finish. So there's a really wide scan of experience.
I think that the link is really the basic point of the project to create anything, and then the organization of the pages is something that is defined by the user more than anybody else.
The other thing about the electronic product is that they have the potential of being a completely alternative mean of distribution. I mean maybe we're looking at the web in a museum tonight, but most likely people will look at it from a public space, from a sidewalk cafe, from a library, from their homes or from their offices, and each time they will have the same experience. It will not be like looking a reproduction in a catalog or something. So there's no difference between the reproduction or the [inaudible]. It's collapsed.
The fact that these things -- these boundaries have disappeared somehow makes it all of a sudden very difficult to evaluate what's the value of a web project in terms of financing. It means basically that as we're developing this medium we'll also have to find a way to make it valuable. I mean to make it valuable, sorry, economically, and it's another really important challenge which I think is an interesting part of what we're doing.
I mean we have to decide whether we want to get money as a not-for-profit organization or we want to bargain crude bits of our web pages with corporations. It's quite difficult to make those choices.
There's been discussions as far as this is concerned that it may alter or it may be a jeopardy for the artists' individual freedom, but I guess this is also something that has to be built in in the way we reflect upon the way we're going to make this thing work because if we don't then the same will happen that has happened with television or any other medium before.
