FENG MENGBO TIGER MEOWS
"Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy" lives on
in the work of Feng Mengbo, and as pricey memorabilia in the night market of Hangzhou. A dog-eared French translation of the original Beijing Opera goes for about five dollars, and the dealer wanted another eight dollars for a set of 12 postcards commemorating, as the postcard jacket declares, "a splendid victory for Chairman Mao's revolutionary line on literature and art."

Since the end of the Cultural Revolution, youngsters are not taught about Mao's victory at Tiger Mountain. The story, at one time endlessly repeated throughout China, is now unknown to youngsters. Feng Mengbo's amalgam of history and the popular game Doom provides the next generation with an entertaining, enlightened reading of recent Chinese history.
