THE GAMES

The Atlanta presentation especially focused on the role of translation and translators as a visible/invisible fact, making use of metaphor, but also incorporating this fact in the actual physical construction of the installation. Since translators are always hidden, why not bring them forward and make them not only present but central to the work? Furthermore, the connection between the subject of translation and the Olympic Games as a worldwide event became clear.

Flags and national anthems, the symbols and logos of the Games and their spirit all relate to issues of translation and raise the question of how people translate the values of their nations. This consideration in turn raises the question of how nations are represented officially in cultural, political, and diplomatic arenas - in short, how the Olympics are a translated event. ON TRANSLATION: THE GAMES thus came to deal with the Games of Translation and the Olympic Games.
